چکیده

Computationally detecting the accepting/rejecting force of an utterance in dialogue is often a complex process. In this paper we focus on a class of utterances we call pragmatic rejections, whose rejection force arises only by pragmatic means. We define the class of pragmatic rejections, present a novel corpus of such utterances, and introduce a formal model to compute what we call rejectionsby-implicature. To investigate the perceived rejection force of pragmatic rejections, we conduct a crowdsourcing experiment and compare the experimental results to a computational simulation of our model. Our results indicate that models of rejection should capture partial rejection force.

A pragmatic approach to distributed nonlinear model predictive control: Application to a hydrostatic drivetrain

The global control of large-scale production machines composed of interacting subsystems is a challenging problem due to the intrinsic presence of high coupling, constraints, nonlinearity, and communication limitations. In this work, a pragmatic approach to distributed nonlinear model predictive control (DNMPC) is presented with guaranteed decrease in cost. Furthermore, in order to tackle time-...

Phonetic reduction and pragmatic organisation in Dutch conversation A usage-based account

This thesis explores the relationship between phonetic reduction and the pragmatic organisation of conversation, and the treatment of this relationship in phonological representation. It reports on an empirical investigation of pragmatic constraints on reduction patterns in a corpus of spontaneous Dutch conversation, combining phonetic analysis and Conversation Analysis. The starting point of t...

Pragmatics and negative sentence processing

Negation is a universal phenomenon in human communication. All natural languages have negation, yet it seems to be absent in animal communication systems (S Altmann, 1967). We use negation frequently for a wide range of purposes, including rejection, denial and talking about non-existence. According to the Oxford English Corpus, “not” is the 13 most frequently used word in the English language....

Combining Acoustic Confidences and Pragmatic Plausibility for Classifying Spoken Chess Move Instructions

This paper describes a machine learning approach to classifying n-best speech recognition hypotheses as either correctly or incorrectly recognised. The learners are trained on a combination of acoustic confidence features and move evaluation scores in a chess-playing scenario. The results show significant improvements over sharp baselines that use confidence rejection thresholds for classificat...

POLITICAL ANIMALS: A Study of the Emerging Animal Rights Movement in the United States

BETWEEN THE SPECIES 124 understandings of the term. First, it is a rejection of utilitarianism as a pragmatic, calculating and consequentialist way of operating an organization or approaching questions about treating humans and animals. Animalines' remark, "We are dismayed by the passivity and utilitarian posture of the leading national organizations" depicts the meaning of this use of the term...
